I make custom mahogany plate reducers for antique and vintage cameras such as such as Gandolfi, Deardorff, Watson, Kodak, and others.
What is a ‘plate reducer’? In traditional plate photography, a plate reducer is a frame designed to hold a smaller plate in the plate holder.
Why would I want to use a plate reducer? Any time you would like to use a smaller plate! Considerations of; economy, testing, ideal portrait focal length, final print size when contact printing, lens coverage, etc.
What are some examples? British Half Plate (6 1/2 x 4 3/4”) to Quarter Plate 3 1/4 x 4 1/4”, 6 1/2 x 8 1/2” down to 5x7”, etc.
Construction: My plate reducers are made using traditional construction techniques, materials (mahogany or similar, silver wire), and finishes (black stained). The exact design depends on application. For wet plate use my plate reducers have silver wire corners.
